Plantar warts

At Lægerne på Amagertorv, we no longer treat plantar warts, as intensive home treatment is just as effective. If you are unsure whether you have plantar warts, we are happy to offer an assessment by our staff.

What are warts?
Plantar warts are caused by a slowly developing viral infection. It can take several months from the time of infection until a visible wart appears. A small black dot is often seen in the center, caused by tiny blood vessels that have bled due to pressure on the foot. Warts are typically located on the weight-bearing areas of the sole.

Are warts contagious?
Yes. The infection is transmitted through skin cells—especially when the skin is moist or has small cracks. A bleeding wart can spread infection through shed skin cells, and warts can therefore spread to other areas.

Should they be treated?
Many plantar warts disappear on their own within 6–12 months (sometimes up to 2 years), but treatment is recommended to reduce the risk of spreading the infection. Clear nail polish can be used to seal the wart. Treatment requires patience.

Treatment
We recommend topical treatment, for example Verucid cutaneous solution or Vortefri, which can be purchased online or at a pharmacy.

Good advice

  • Keep the wart covered with nail polish, wart treatment, or a close-fitting plaster (“artificial skin”).
  • Wear shower sandals to reduce the risk of transmission.
